Post-Operative Instructions: Dental Implant Placement

What to Expect — and How to Heal
Aesthetic Dental

Introduction (General Care Instructions)

Following your dental implant placement, proper care is essential for successful healing and integration of the implant with your bone. This guide provides detailed instructions to help you manage the post-operative period. Please adhere to these guidelines to ensure optimal results and contact our office if you have any questions or concerns.

Common Post-Op Symptoms & How to Manage Them

It is normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and minor bleeding after dental implant surgery. Here’s how to manage these common symptoms:

  • Bleeding: Slight bleeding or oozing from the surgical site is normal for the first 24-48 hours. Avoid rinsing or spitting vigorously for the first 24 hours, as this can dislodge the blood clot. If bleeding is persistent, place a clean gauze pad over the area and bite down firmly for 30-60 minutes. Elevating your head with two pillows when lying down can also help minimize bleeding and swelling.
  • Swelling: Swelling is a common and expected reaction after implant surgery. Apply ice packs to the outside of your face, near the surgical area, for 15-20 minutes on and 10 minutes off, for the first 24-48 hours. This will significantly help reduce swelling. Swelling typically peaks 2-3 days after surgery and then gradually subsides.
  • Pain: Take prescribed pain medication as directed. It is often recommended to take the first dose before the local anesthetic completely wears off. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or naproxen can also be used, often in combination with prescribed medication, for effective pain management. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

Dietary Restrictions and Recommendations

Proper nutrition is crucial for healing. For the first 10-14 days, or until your mouth is no longer sore, you must stick to a soft food diet. Avoid chewing directly on the implant site.

Foods to eat:

  • Yogurt, pudding, Jell-O, ice cream
  • Applesauce, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs
  • Smoothies (without a straw)
  • Broth-based soups (lukewarm)
  • Soft pasta, well-cooked vegetables
  • Cottage cheese, soft fruits like bananas and peaches

Foods to avoid:

  • Hard, crunchy, or chewy foods (nuts, popcorn, hard candies, tough meats)
  • Hot liquids or foods for the first 24 hours
  • Spicy foods
  • Alcohol
  • Using straws (creates suction that can dislodge the blood clot)

Gradually reintroduce solid foods as comfort allows, but continue to be cautious with the implant site.

Medications and Pain Management

Take all prescribed medications as directed. This may include antibiotics to prevent infection and pain relievers to manage discomfort. Complete the full course of antibiotics even if you feel better. For pain, a combination of NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) and acetaminophen is often recommended. Follow your dentist”s specific instructions.

Activity Restrictions (Physical Activity, Work, etc.)

Avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise for at least 3-7 days after surgery, or as advised by your dentist. Increased blood pressure from physical exertion can lead to increased bleeding and swelling. Rest is important for proper healing.

When to Contact Us / Emergency Instructions

Contact our office immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Excessive bleeding that does not stop with pressure.
  • Severe pain that is not relieved by medication.
  • Swelling that significantly increases after 2-3 days or spreads to your neck/throat.

  • Numbness that persists beyond the expected duration of the anesthetic.
  • Pus or foul odor from the surgical site.
  • Any allergic reaction to medication (rash, itching, difficulty breathing).
